Sugar & Sweetneers

Purolite ion exchange resins are used in a variety of processes in the sugar refining industry, both beet and cane. Check out our new and improved Corn Sweetener and Cane Sugar Refining guides. These brochures are your one stop shop for all of your Purolite corn, sweetener, and sugar refining information.

The basic principles of sugar refining include:
  • Decalcification
  • Decolourisation using ion exchange resins and adsorbents
  • Demineralisation
  • Desugarisation of molasses
  • De-ashing
  • Quentin process
  • Carix process
  • Chromatographic separations
Corn and Wheat derived Sweeteners. The production of sweeteners from either corn or wheat feedstocks utilizes Purolite ion exchange resins in various processes. These include:
  • Deashing/demineralisation of various syrups
  • Decolourisation and deodorisation of high performing sweetening products. Taste removal to prevent tainting of end use products
  • Chromatographic separation of mixtures to provide purer raw materials prior to further downstream processing

Pharma-ceutical

Purolite resins are used in drug formulations as API's or excipients. They meet the demands of the American (USP), European (Ph.Eur.), British (BP) and Japanese (JP) pharmacopoeias.

Drug Master Files are held for each API product manufactured in Purolite's FDA approved facilities, while other resins used in extraction and purification processes, or for the production of water for injectables, meet the requirements of both the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Union.

Pharmaceutical applications for ion exchange resins and polymeric adsorbents, for which Purolite resins can be used as active pharmaceutical ingredients and excipients, and as water treatment media. Other applications include extraction and purification of enzymes, hormones, alkaloids, viruses, antibiotics streptomycin, penicillin, and treatment of fermentation products, etc.

Food & Beverage

Purolite resins are used worldwide in the manufacturing of food and beverage products to remove impurities and improve productivity. Regulatory compliance, customer and operational constraints are critical.

Some examples include:
  • Milk whey for baby food formulations
  • Gelatine extraction for jellies and other ingredients
  • Fruit juice purification and debittering
  • Extraction of enzymes, amino acids, lysine and others
  • Grape must treatment
  • Soft Drink Processing
Purolite ion exchange resins are at the forefront of new applications in the food industry.

Hydro-metallurgy

Purolite products are utilised in the recovery of Uranium, Gold, Molybdenum, Rhenium, Nickel, Copper and other valuable metals.

Purolite has a range of products tailored for all methods of industrial hydrometallurgy. Such methods comprise the following:
  • Sulfuric acid and (bi-)carbonate leaching of uranium
  • Metals recovery from clarified solutions; either Heap Leaching (HL) or In-Situ-Leaching (ISL) operations
  • Uranium, gold and basic non-ferrous metals sorption from pulps; i.e. "Resin-In-Pulp" (RIP) and "Resin-In-Leach" (RIL) operations
  • Extraction of various low level values from pulps and solutions
  • Ion Exchange recovery of palladium(II) from nitrate weak acidic solutions
We work closely with customers from around the world to improve recovery and productivity using highly selective resins. Technical demands from our customers are matched to high performing specialty resins and supported by our technical experts.

Petro-chemical

Listed below are examples of petrochemical and specialty applications for Purolite catalysts and resins.

Application:
  • Caprolactam
  • Catalysis

Metals Finishing

Purolite range of chelating resins are used in the Metal Finishing Industry to selectively remove metal contaminants from waste streams or to reduce impurities in the electroplating solutions.

With increasingly tight enviromental regulations requiring lower discharge levels; the use of highly selective Purolite resins are an essential tool in meeting compliance.

Ground & Potable Water

Purolite is on the forefront of this growing industry by providing product technologies to address increasing regulatory requirements and enable safe and effective use of available water resources.

Electronics & Semi-conductor

To achieve the ultimate in water purity for the electronics industry, extensive treatment is often required. This normally requires a pretreatment stage followed by RO or Make Up Ion Exchange plants, or often a combination of both to achieve a resistivity 10 to 15 M Ω.cm. Then to achieve the ultimate quality > 18.2 Ω.cm special grades of high purity resins are required in the polishing stage. These are now available from Purolite under the UltraClean range of products.

Purolite's all round capability and extensive range of products enables us to assist end users in the three plant areas of Pretreatment, Ion Exchange Make-Up and Final Polishing.

Fossil & Nuclear Power

Many fossil & nuclear power stations in the Americas, Europe and Asia operate succesfully with Purolite resins. The Purolite NRW product range meets the latest published requirements for the new generation of fossil & nuclear power stations.

We provide resin for:
  • High Purity Water
  • Resins to aid the cleanup of low radiation waste water
Our macroporous resins allow more efficient, lower-cost refueling cleanup and maintenance of reactor coolant and radwaste streams.

  • Superior cleanup compared with competing resins and technologies
  • Less exposure for maintenance workers
  • Less low level radwaste generation
  • Clear pool water
  • No modification to existing systems needed
  • Effective for high organic and or boron containning waters
